Zuriel’s Homemade Bread

Prep in the House of Deacon Malachiyah is healthy, delicious, and above all, fresh! Homemade bread is made to be enjoyed for Sabbath meals, as well as meals throughout the week. The recipe below details how to make a beautiful braided loaf of bread, and can also be used to make rolls as pictured. With a few simple ingredients, you too can make fresh bread for your family! Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 3 and 1/2 cups of flour

  • 1 and 1/4 cups warm water

  • 1/4 cup melted butter, plus extra to brush on bread after baking

  • 1 tablespoon of dry yeast

Directions

  • Place warm water, sugar, and yeast and let sit for 10 minutes to allow the yeast to proof.
  • After 10 minutes, add flour, melted butter and salt to the mixture. The mixture will be sticky.
  • Add a dusting of flour to the surface you plan to knead the dough. I use a cleaned countertop.
  • Place sticky dough on top of dusting of flour and knead for 5 to 8 minutes. You can also use a stand-up mixer to knead your dough if you’d like.
  • After kneading, place your dough into a greased bowl. Cover it and let sit for 45 minutes in a warm place. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees while this is taking place.
  • After 45 minutes has elapsed, put dough back on the counter dusted in flour. Knead an additional 2 minutes and form dough into a smooth ball.
  • Cut the dough into three even sections, and roll each section out into a log shape. Each log should be approximately 13 inches long.
  • Place logs on your pan and braid the 3 logs to form a braid. Allow the formed dough to sit and rise another 30 minutes in a warm place.
  • After 30 minutes has elapsed, place pan into your preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  • After bread has baked for 30 minutes, remove and brush melted butter on the top and let cool.

Once cooled, the bread can be placed in Ziplock bags and stored for approximately four days.
